Sleep Apnea Device
Sleep apnea is a common but serious disorder in which a person’s breathing is interrupted repeatedly during sleep, which can deprive your brain and other vital organs of the oxygen they need to function. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the upper airway collapses or becomes blocked during sleep, sometimes causing hundreds of breathing interruptions over the course of a single night. Though this can lead to fatigue, irritability, high blood pressure, memory problems, or other health issues, most individuals with OSA are unaware of the blockage and go undiagnosed over their lifetime. If you snore loudly, there is over a 70% chance you have OSA.
Typically, OSA is treated with a CPAP machine (a mask worn during sleep which keeps continuous air flowing through the mouth or nose). The constant air pressure keeps the upper airway tissues from collapsing, but some patients find the machine difficult to adjust to or use consistently. Bestcare Dental offers an alternative treatment, an oral appliance which the American Academy of Sleep Medicine now considers the first line treatment for mild to moderate OSA. This Mandibular Repositioning Oral Appliance fits over the upper and lower teeth like a nightguard. It keeps the lower jaw protruded forward in the optimal position to maintain an open airway throughout the night.
If you suspect you or a loved one may have OSA, Dr. Popescu will begin with a free consultation to determine if you are at risk for sleep apnea and could benefit from an oral appliance. Following a positive risk assessment, you will be given an overnight sleep test to complete in the comfort of your own home and return to the office for processing. If the sleep test indicates you would benefit from an oral appliance, a fully optimized and custom-fit appliance will be manufactured and issued to you.
